This catalogue accompanied an exhibition celebrating the transformative gift to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art of more than one hundred prints from the Barbara S. Bowman Collection. In addition to the commercial prints that tested the limits of government censorship, the collection includes an abundance of privately published surimono boasting luxurious materials, with highlights from masters and innovators of the art form, such as Suzuki Harunobu, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Hiroshige. Spanning the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the exquisite prints in this book offer insights into the history of a distinctively Japanese art form with international influence.
