Cornerstone of Collecting: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Japanese Prints and Their Inspirational Legacy
at the Chazen Museum of Art, the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Recorded October 14, 2021
Celebrated for his genius at both architecture and design, Frank Lloyd Wright was also an avid collector and dealer of Japanese woodblock prints. In the late 1920s, mathematics professor Edward Burr Van Vleck acquired approximately 4,000 of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prints, which became the foundation of his own significant collection. This extensive collection of ukiyo-e was eventually donated by his heirs to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he had taught for many years. In our Zoom panel event, curators and scholars will discuss the legacy of this important collection, its critical role at a teaching institution, and the challenges of stewardship in the 21st century.
